A Live Woolly Mammoth From 1943? Get Out of Here!

Woolly mammoths were hunted to extinction beginning some 10,000 years ago by humans. The last known surviving mammoths in Eurasia and north America started dying out towards the end of the last ice age. Scientists believe 1700 B.C. was the last time any human could have ever seen one. However, this new footage from Siberia is putting that theory into question. If this footage is real, could it be possible that there are surviving populations in Siberia? Here's the video description:

REAL Woolly MAMMOTH (Mammuthus primigenius) sighting (Yakutsk city, Sakha Republic, Siberia 1943).

After the conclusion of the WW2 Battle of Stalingrad, Nazi Party member and official photographer for the NSDAP, Holger Hildebrand, was captured by the Red Army at the Battle of Stalingrad. He and thousands of other Wehrmacht soldiers were later sent on a death march towards Siberia; this mammoth footage is understood to have been taken during that journey. (Hildebrand is believed to have died a prisoner of war at a Soviet forced labor camp in late 1945. His Granddaughter later came into possession of the footage when his belongings were repatriated to Germany from Russia decades after his death.)

The hoaxer flipped the image horizontally, desaturated it, overlaid it with a few filters and cropped it fairly tightly but if you skip to 19:00 in this youtube clip you'll see the "WW2 mammoth" front and center:

  5. Confirms on all points: Coned head, exceptionally long tusks and hair..

The starting point if you want to access the backs tory(from wiki entry on Battle of Stalingrad)

Out of the nearly 110,000 German prisoners captured in Stalingrad, only about 6,000 ever returned. Already weakened by disease, starvation and lack of medical care during the encirclement, they were sent on death marches (75,000 survivors died within 3 months of capture) to prisoner camps and later to labour camps all over the Soviet Union. Some 35,000 were eventually sent on transports, of which 17,000 did not survive. Most died of wounds, disease (particularly typhus), cold, overwork, mistreatment, and malnutrition. Some were kept in the city to help rebuild. A handful of senior officers was taken to Moscow and used for propaganda purposes, and some of them joined the National Committee for a Free Germany. Some, including Paulus, signed anti-Hitler statements that were broadcast to German troops. Paulus testified for the prosecution during the Nuremberg Trials and assured families in Germany that those soldiers taken prisoner at Stalingrad were safe.[22]:p.401 He remained in the Soviet Union until 1952, then moved to Dresden in East Germany, where he spent the remainder of his days defending his actions at Stalingrad, and was quoted as saying that Communism was the best hope for postwar Europe.[22]:p.280 General Walther von Seydlitz-Kurzbach offered to raise an anti-Hitler army from the Stalingrad survivors, but the Soviets did not accept. It was not until 1955 that the last of the 5-6,000 survivors were repatriated (to West Germany) after a plea to the Politburo by Konrad Adenauer.

People who like investigating witness claims or anecdotes via research, psychology or plain old common sense and logic can think about the backstory.

This video is most likely a hoax, but I would like to learn whether or not extant wooly mammoths are even possible...

    2. 7:37. You make 2 correct points. Ask yourself a knowable question to retrieve your answer yourself. What large wooly mammal was hunted to near extinction. The Bison. When heards were re introduced into the wild the farmers and ranchers cried out that the common strain of released Bison had shown a susceptibility to Brucellosis. If a new genetic strain was not found there was a real danger of extinction or eradication. A herd of rare wood bison that were native, genetically pure and had remained hidden were located in Canada. A true "relict population". If that is possible. Then Mammoths as late as 1900s are feasible. And it makes your comment the most interesting one here. Goodnight.

If you ask if any still survive today - I highly doubt it but maybe soon science will be able to clone a real one with some of the blood they found in frozen mammoths.

Scientists are ignoring the extinction of every other living thing from the same period including the humans that hunted the mammoths. Why? Because we all know man is to blame for every environmental calamity... at least according to liberal scientists.

The buffalo was hunted to eradicate the primary food source of Indians. A totally different situation.

  26. I'm sure that when the Russians took German prisoners of war on a death march to Siberia, they made sure that one of the prisoners was able to carry a bulky camera of the period along with him. They could then have made sure that a record was made of prisoners being shot by the Russians on the way to Siberia as well as the occasional Mammoth that happened to be passing.

And they then took the time and effort to save his film and hand them back to his relatives after he died in captivity!

    Sounds plausible!
